ANNUAL EVENTS
Broad Street Run (www.broadstreetrun.com) – Broad Street, one of the busiest street in Philadelphia is closed the first Sunday in May each year for the ten-miler Broad Street Run, and marks Philadelphia's official start to the running season. More than16,000 runners participate each year. The Broad Street Run has been named one of the fastest 10-mile courses in the country by Runner's World.
Dad Vail Regatta (www.dadvail.org) – The largest and one of the oldest (since 1961) collegiate regatta's in the county, the 2,000 meter race is held on the Schuylkill River, and utilizes Boathouse Row for athlete and spectator accommodations. The Dad Vail Regatta draws more than 100 colleges & universities from the United States and Canada. Second weekend in May.
Philadelphia Distance Run (www.runphilly.com) – Philadelphia's premier half-marathon captures more than15,000 registered participants each year, and 100,000 spectators along the beautiful course of Fairmount Park's East and West River Drives. Live entertainment for runners and spectators lines the half-marathon course to give it a unique touch. Held in September.
Philadelphia Marathon (www.philadelphiamarathon.com) – Named the best qualifier to get you to Boston by Running USA, the Philadelphia Marathon is one of the fastest courses in the country. Held in mid-November each with more than 8,500 participants, the marathon is a great way to see America's most historic mile while making some history of your own.
Penn Relays (www.thepennrelays.com) – In its 113 year history the Penn Relays has provided competition for more athletes than any other track meet in the world. During the past ten years, more than 100,000 young men and women from the around the world have competed in the Penn Relays. Three days of track and field competition are held last weekend in April at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
Head of the Schuylkill Regatta (www.hosr.org) – Each year more then 10,000 rowers descend upon Boathouse Row for this spectacular fall regatta. Held the last weekend in October, the Head of the Schuylkill has become the largest one day regatta in the world.
Stotesbury Cup (www.boathouserow.org) – Since 1927, the Stotesbury Cup has taken place on the Schuylkill River, and host over 5,000 high school rowers each May. More than 180 different high schools compete in this prestigious rowing event.
Philadelphia International Cycling Championship (www.procyclingtour.com) – More than 160 of the world's top professional cyclist descend upon the city of Philadelphia to race in the longest running and richest single-day cycling road race in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of spectators line the 14.4 mile course as cyclist complete ten laps of the circuit throughout Philadelphia, including battling the infamous and steep 17% grade Manayunk Wall.
Philadelphia Triathlon (www.phillytri.com) – Dubbed "worthy of cult status" by Triathlon Magazine, the Philadelphia Triathlon is at the top of list of new and exciting annual multi-sport events taking place in Fairmount Park. More than 2,000 registered particpants take part each June.
Devon Horse Show (www.thedevonhorseshow.com) – The largest and oldest outdoor multi-breed competition in the United States, the Devon Horse Show, draws competitors and spectators from around the world. This ten day horse and carriage show with a country fair atmosphere withstands a 111 year tradition within the Philadelphia area.
Radnor Hunt Races (www.radnorraces.org) – More than just a day at the races, the spring tradition of steeplechasing at the Radnor Hunt features six exciting races of horse galloping over hurdles and timber fences. The Radnor Hunt Races hold a 78 year tradition within the Philadelphia region.
John Wanamaker Athletic Award – Given annually to the "athlete, team or organization that has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia and to the team or sport in which they excel." Click here for more information.
