Wanamaker Award Recipients Announced
The Philadelphia Sports Congress will award this year’s John Wanamaker Athletic Award to Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers during a ceremony and luncheon on Tuesday, June 5 in the Crystal Tea Room of the Wanamaker Building. Giroux emerged as one of the elite players in the National Hockey League this season.
Jerry Segal, whose golf fundraisers support Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, will also be honored with the Sports Congress’ Robert P. Levy Community Service Award, Ed Snider will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, and the City of Philadelphia’s Parks & Recreation Department will present its second annual Sports Volunteer of the Year Award to the Katie Kirlin Fund.
Since 1961, the Wanamaker Athletic Award has been presented to the athlete, team or organization that has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia and to the team or sport in which they excel.
Villanova Football, Winners of the 2010 Wanamaker Award
The momentum from their first football national championship continued today as the City of Philadelphia, led by Commissioner of the Department of Parks and Recreation Mike DiBerardinis, and Philadelphia Sports Congress (PSC), a division of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau, presented the Villanova University Football Team with the 2010 John Wanamaker Athletic Award at a ceremony at the Wanamaker Building’s Crystal Tea Room.
